Solar that fits on any vehicle: Los Angeles company begins pre-order deliveries in December 2026 for sedans, trucks, vans, RVs and campers, with open-source replacement parts, a polycarbonate shell and a quick-release lock.
LOS ANGELES, Oct. 27, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- DartSolar today announced that deliveries of the DartSolar, an expanding solar array that mounts to any vehicle's roof rack or truck bed, begin in December for pre-order customers. Two modules fit a sedan's roof rack for 1,000 watts of solar; three or four fit on any truck for 1,500 to 2,000 watts of solar; four or more fit the roof of a van, trailer or camper for 2,000 watts and up. Each DartSolar module is about 23 inches by 6 feet when contracted, but can extend to 15 feet when parked. DartSolar installs on standard crossbars without drilling, and can be removed in minutes.
Tested at 100 miles per hour. During development, the DartSolar was tested folded at 100 miles per hour in the desert, in both the standard and side-to-side configurations, although the company recommends no one drive over 70 miles per hour with a DartSolar.
Modular by design. Every DartSolar is a 500-watt unit, and units join side by side to cover the full roof surface of any vehicle. Owners can start with one module and add more as their roof and budget allow.
Two ways to mount on a truck. Modules can ride on the cab roof and extend front to back over the bed, shading the bed and tailgate. Or they can mount on both the cab roof and the bed and extend side to side, like a vehicle's doors, for the most watts per truck.
Not a charger replacement. The DartSolar is built to make power where there is no outlet: during an outage, at a campsite, or on a jobsite running tools and appliances. It can charge an EV, but because an EV consumes so much energy, expect about 10 to 20 miles of range per day. For most owners it keeps a power station or house battery full.
Open parts, shared improvements. The 3D files for the DartSolar's plastic parts, including bearing blocks, handlebars and end caps, are available as STEP files at dartsolar.com/open under a share-alike license for free. Owners can print a replacement or order one; anyone who modifies a part is required to publish their version, and DartSolar will host community designs submitted to open@dartsolar.com. "A product with a ten-year outdoor target should outlive the company's spare-parts bin," said Omid Sadeghpour, founder of DartSolar. "If you can print the part, you never wait on us."
Unlock from any side. A new quick-release lock opens the panels from multiple angles, so a van, RV or camper owner can deploy and stow the array from wherever they are standing, including a ladder at the rear of a tall vehicle.
Built for the road. A 4 mm polycarbonate shell now covers the panels and shrugs off hail, gravel and road debris. Polycarbonate is the material used in race-car windshields and riot shields. In an upcoming video, the company will hit a DartSolar with a baseball bat to show what the shell can take.
Availability. DartSolar has been in research and development for four years. Two years ago pre-orders were taken. Pre-order deliveries will start this December. Orders placed now ship in order received after the pre-order batch. Shipping within the contiguous United States is included; international orders shipping costs are subsidized by DartSolar.
