Ultra Violette Becomes First Brand in the US to Launch a Sunscreen Containing Newly FDA-Approved Filter Bemotrizinol

PR Newswire

Cult Australian suncare brand debuts Unblock Screen™ SPF 50, the first US sunscreen formulated with Bemotrizinol (BEMT), approved by the FDA in June 2026

NEW YORK, Aug. 31, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Ultra Violette, the cult Australian suncare brand known for pairing high-performance SPF with nourishing skincare ingredients designed for daily wear, today announced the US launch of Unblock Screen™ SPF 50 Breakout-Friendly SKINSCREEN™. The launch marks the first sunscreen in the US market to contain Bemotrizinol (BEMT), the broad-spectrum chemical filter approved by the FDA in June 2026 and the first new sunscreen filter cleared by the FDA in over 25 years.

Ultra Violette Unblock Screen™ SPF 50 Breakout-Friendly SKINSCREEN™

Ultra Violette entered the US market in 2025 at Sephora nation-wide, with a range of five products formulated specifically for American consumers. With BEMT now added to the FDA monograph, Ultra Violette is bringing its most advanced formulation technology long used in its Australian and international SKINSCREEN™ range, to the US for the first time.

A New Era for US Sun Care

Bemotrizinol is a broad-spectrum chemical filter that provides top-tier coverage across the full UVB and UVA spectrum while remaining highly photostable. It is the first chemical filter to be added to the FDA's GRASE (Generally Recognized As Safe and Effective) list, placing it alongside mineral filters such as zinc oxide. Compared with older chemical filters, BEMT carries a lighter chemical load, is associated with fewer instances of irritation, and is effective at lower concentrations, leaving more room in a formula for skincare actives and enabling more cosmetically elegant, lightweight textures with no white cast.

"This is such a win for the US consumer. It broadens the range of SPF formats available, allows for more elegant, cosmetically pleasing textures, and supports the kind of robust protection that matters for overall skin health including skin cancers, skin ageing, melasma and pigmentation. I am hopeful that BEMT's categorization of GRASE is also going to help shift the broader conversation around chemical sunscreens, which are so often unfairly stigmatized despite all their many benefits." Says Ava Matthews, Co-founder of Ultra Violette.

Co-founder, Bec Jefferd continues, "We are incredibly proud to be the first to bring our SPF products formulated with Bemotrizinol to Sephora and the wider US market. We have developed products using BEMT in our global range for close to 10 years, which is why we've been able to move fast not just with the launch of Unblock Screen, but with a pipeline of BEMT-powered products to soon follow, starting with the highly anticipated launch of Fave Screen in January 2027."

Introducing Unblock Screen™ SPF 50

Designed for acne-prone, oily and reactive skin types, Unblock Screen™ is a soft-matte, zinc-bemotrizinol SPF 50 sunscreen formulated to deliver broad-spectrum protection without contributing to breakouts or congestion. The non-comedogenic, non-acnegenic formula combines BEMT with Bix'Activ®, which helps keep excess oil in check while blurring the appearance of pores, and Pentavitin, a plant-based extract that supports hydration for up to 72 hours.

The airy, whipped texture is designed to gently blur pores while shine and breakouts stay in check, and the product is housed in a touchless, press-and-play airless jar for a hygienic, mess-free application.

Further innovation with BEMT

Hot on the heels of Unblock Screen, in January 2027 the brand will launch Fave Screen™ SPF 50, an ultralight, brightening milky sunscreen powered by 5% Bemotrizinol alongside niacinamide and vitamin C and E to visibly brighten, smooth and even skin tone. With an invisible, glass-skin finish designed to layer seamlessly under makeup, Fave Screen will make Ultra Violette the only brand at Sephora offering two BEMT-powered sunscreens, reinforcing the brand's position at the forefront of next-generation US sun care.

Availability

Unblock Screen™ SPF 50 is available in the US from August 31st, 2026 at ultraviolettespf.com and Sephora.com, and in Sephora stores nationwide from October 2, 2026. RRP $40.
